We did it!! 30 Day Declutter Challenge – Review and Final Pics

Final car pic

So, after 30 days we’ve now got rid of 465 items! We actually ended up throwing in a bunch more so goodness knows what our total is, but it’s been an amazing experience. If you didn’t join us this month I’d highly recommend it for February! No shame in starting a New Year’s Resolution in February.

Final haul 2

In the end the whole family ended up joining in, and we discovered plenty of areas untouched for months (e.g. bathroom cabinets, makeup collections, tupperware drawers, fancy dress boxes, and even under the bed! You’d be amazed how many things you can throw out without even noticing they’re gone.

Final haul

So, we took our items to a selection of charity shops (depending on what they sold), and put a lot in the bin/recycling. We also took another boot-full to the tip that we couldn’t fit in the picture! Serious self congratulation points going on here.

Now…. what’s next for us? Well, we’re certainly not stopping here. We’ll be toning down from the hardcore clearout stats, but we’re all going to have a donation bag/box in our rooms so that when we’re feeling strong/impulsive we can just chuck an item in. The secret with this though is to NEVER look in the bag! Just take it to a charity shop and feel good about it. If you look in I guarantee you’ll cave and take at least one thing out.

We came across a few interesting motivational blogs along the way, the most memorable of which gave us the 20/20 rule. It’s designed to help you get rid of the things you keep ‘just in case you need them someday’ – the rule says you can replace everything for under $20 in under 20…. and when you think about each item individually it’s totally true. Very liberating!

I’m also thinking about doing something during Lent. Perhaps not as hardcore as this 40 Bag in 40 Days blog but something to keep up the pace.

So, who’s doing it next month? And who’s got a suggestion for what our next challenge should be??

OOTD – How to dress like Clueless (when you’re not going to a costume party)

DSC01639

Obviously I love Clueless (as every self respecting fashionista does), and have always been inspired by the outfits in it. Charity shops are full of nineties throwbacks so it should be easy to dress like Cher every day, but it often comes across costume-y. So, I was thrilled with this outfit as I felt super cute and preppy, but also still modern, and was definitely channeling Ms Horowitz.

DSC01628

I so love wearing bright colours in Winter, and always try to fight the endless jeans urge with some nice thick tights – don’t let those skirts and dresses get packed away all season!

DSC01633

I tried to keep the accessories quite vintage too, with this charity shop necklace, and royal purple suede clutch.

Couldn’t help but be happy all day in a flippy skirt and bright colours – loved it (plus was super warm)!

BIG NEWS

I’ve done my first ever vlog! This is something I’ve been meaning to do for ages but was too shy/busy but I’ve finally made the time and taken the leap. Pretty please watch it, like it, subscribe, and give me feedback. It’s certainly far from perfect right now but I’m proud to have just made a start and I’ve already learnt heaps about youtube, what to film, and what edits well.

And here’s what I wore….

I talk you through the whole outfit and why I chose it for charity shopping in the video, but here’s a sneak peek.

How to do Sport Luxe on a budget

budget_sport_luxe

I’ve been wanting to try the sport luxe trend for ages but it’s so hard to toe the line between high fashion and adidas chav! These trousers are a dead dupe for one of the designer runway pieces so I was thrilled to find them in Crossroads (a second hand consignment store) in San Francisco on 50% off. I decided to opt for a silk tee to keep the luxe blend and avoid looking too casual. This outfit worked really well for the variable weather we’ve been having too.

I’ve also been addicted to my new (aka someone else’s reject) leather Wayfarer bag. It didn’t have the key so was super cheap – but I’ll never need to lock it anyway so yipee. It fits an amazingly large amount so I’ve been using it as a weekend bag to visit my boyfriend in London, but it it also made a great bowling ball style bag for this sport luxe outfit.

To finish it off I wanted super opulent shoes to counteract the sporty vibe and make sure it’s not too casual. I opted for my favourite silver blingy stilettos and think the ensemble worked out really well!

OOTD – Porkpie Hat and a Playsuit

porkpie_hat_playsuit

I friggin’ love this hat! Found in Waggy Tails charity shop (sorry to sound like a broken record but it really is the best charity shop in the whole world – literally). It’s too small for my freakishly giant head but I’ve just opted for the jaunty back-placement and it works just fine. Love the browny mink colour and the adorable bow – just basically love everything ever. Plus is says ‘Made in the UK’ on the label which makes it vintage (a simple way to check if your vintage is legit). Apparently it’s called a ‘pork pie’ hat and I’ve included a picture below of Taylor Swift wearing a $60 version… #justsayin

I paired it with one of my favourite outfits – a playsuit, any playsuit. They’re so comfy and stylish and versatile. I just can’t get enough.

OOTD – How to make a simple beach cover-up stylish

 beach_coverup_4

Summer is finally here! It’s been beautiful in Bournemouth recently and we’ve been spending every second possible at the beach.

For the hottest day yet I wanted an outfit that was breezy and casual but also chic and thought it was time to bring out this snakeskin printed beach coverup. It’s fit is baggy but not unflatteringly oversized, and the fabric creases quite a bit but it doesn’t seem to matter when you’re at the beach. Plus… it’s got pockets! These aren’t colours I’d normally pick but I actually really loved having a change from my regular colour pallet.

I teamed it with some burgundy and gold heels – I know heels at the beach is silly but you’ve got to live a little right?!

My sunglasses are also from a charity shop and are Calvin Klein but were only £1.50… just another reason for you guys to head over to your nearest charity shop right now and unearth a bargain.

A weekend of contrasts…. Day 2

DSC_0039

On the Sunday I headed out to the Big Vintage Lunch at Shelley Theatre near Boscombe. It was a brilliant event – really well organised with lots of different activities and entertainment. I’d highly recommend going next year, and if you can’t wait that long then head over to The Shake and Stir festival which is organised by the same group(s) and is also free for the daytime activities!

Of course I had to embrace the theme of 50s and dress appropriately. I opted for a big floral skirt (plus my Grandma’s massive vintage petticoat) and a cropped purple shirt with retro sunglasses. Then adding red lipstick and pearls was absolutely essential!

Who wears cheetah?? OOTD

20140409_123501

Summer has finally started in beautiful Bournemouth and I couldn’t wait to get down to the beach! This week I went thrifting along Ashley Road and came across an awesome sale in my glorious Waggy Tails. All their coats and boots were 50% off and they had a bunch of fake fur coats. I couldn’t resist this awesome cheetah print one and today seemed like the perfect day for its first outing.

I’ve also been hooked on my new leather-look leggings – they seem to go with everything and always make me feel super fashionable and edgy. I often end up disliking trends while they’re in fashion and then finally becoming a convert – this is definitely one of those times! Do you ever do that or am I mad??

New Year’s Eve…. what I wore!

DSC_0064

This year I had New Years indoors which was a nice change from having to wrap up and stand by the Thames (although the fireworks did look insane this year!). So I took advantage of that and opted for a bodycon skirt and luxe-tee, plus the combo of black with rich jewel purple felt perfect. I got this top that very same day in the Scope redecorating sale – only £1! The diamante embellishment didn’t have any missing (a vital thing to check for on your rushed thrifting – don’t regret it later!) and I just loved the colour. I opted for lilac Barry M nails to add an extra colour hint. Finally, ‘party’ shoes – my silver gem-embellished Primark heels.
