After looking stunning at the Grammys, although causing some controversy by being so cosy with Chris Brown, Rihanna has had another busy media week. It’s a huge deal for the UK that she’s making her designing debut at a British brand (River Island) and showing at London Fashion Week. As predicted, the show, held in the Sorting Office on New Oxford Street, featured some seriously big name models and a very flashy after party.
Firstly there was a mega cast of upcoming and major British models; Jourdan Dunn, Charlotte Free, Ataui Deng and Bambi Northwood Blyth. Then the atmosphere, which had major party flavour and bottomless champagne, not to mention the grungy super cool staging. That’s without even bringing up that Cara Delavigne herself owned the front row swagger.
However, for me, the clothes were a bit of a let down, even despite my soft spot for nineties throwbacks. There was a lot of flesh on show with very daring splits, razor sharp abs and a seriously high cut swimsuit. But aside from the flesh, it wasn’t all that darling, lots of plain fabrics and simple tailoring with not a lot of substance under all the attitude and middle fingers.
The media seemed to be swept up by the cool factor as a refreshing change from the elegant ladylike runway shows that’ve been shown so far this season. But I thought most things shows could be picked up as genuine vintage from second hand stores. But of course… it’s much easier to just grab them off River Island’s rails!
